Exercise
Forms of exercise can help alleviate symptoms and promote well-being
Participating in exercise classes or sports can be a challenge for people with lipoedema, partly because it can be difficult to find suitable clothing and footwear, and also because other participants may lack understanding of lipoedema.
However, exercise is for everyone! Also, keeping active is important for stimulating the lymphatic system and promoting general good health. There are now many good and comfortable sports compression garments available.
Low-impact exercises – especially swimming, walking, cycling and yoga – are recommended and enjoyed by many women with lipoedema. They are particularly beneficial because they increase lymphatic drainage and improve blood flow through the affected limbs. The pressure of deep water on the legs helps improve lymphatic and venous function, and supports painful joints. Walking in chest-high water (in a safe place) is good because it provides graduated, painless compression to the legs. Click here to watch Lipoedema UK's video about exercising in water.
However, high-impact exercises such as jogging, step-aerobics and contact sports are not recommended, as they may exacerbate joint pain and lead to bruising. There is increasing evidence that exercising with weights is also beneficial for all women.
